How Many Medals Does a Medal Hanger Hold?
A single 15-inch rail holds roughly 8–12 medals hung side by side, or around double that if you layer ribbons. But rail length is not really what decides it — ribbon width and medal thickness do.
Here is how to work out the number you will actually get, and how to avoid buying twice.
The maths, roughly
Most race ribbons are 25–38 mm wide (1–1.5 inches). On a 15-inch rail:
- Narrow ribbons (25 mm): about 12–14 side by side
- Standard ribbons (32 mm): about 10–12
- Wide ribbons (38 mm+): about 6–10
Layering — hanging medals partly over one another — roughly doubles those numbers, at the cost of seeing every medal clearly.

Buy for three years, not today
The single most common mistake is buying for the collection you have. Count your medals, then estimate how many races you do a year and multiply by three. If that number passes 12, buy a two-rail display from the start.
Upgrading later is not just an extra purchase — it means new holes in the wall and a mismatched pair.
What actually limits capacity
- Ribbon width — the real constraint.
- Medal thickness — thick medals sit proud and crowd their neighbours.
- Total weight — not a capacity limit as such, but it decides your wall fixings. Budget 50–80 g per road medal, 80–120 g for long-course.
- How you hang them — spread out reads cleaner; layered fits more.
When it fills up
- Add a second display below the first — one per year or per season.
- Retire older medals to a keepsake box and rotate what is on show.
- Layer ribbons — free, immediate, slightly less tidy.
